Mud, dirt, and other fun things...

Playing in the mud. Jumping in puddles. Not caring if you were soak 'n wet. Digging trenches and moats and goopy castles.
That's what reminded me of my childhood this week. When I was growing up, my brother, sister, and I were outside the whole day. Minus lunchtime. My mom sent us out in our "old clothes" and we had so much fun!
This week the kids wanted to play in the mud. I let them dig trenches and play with the water and mud a bit. However, I do think times have changed. I'm not sure if most parents want a child covered in dirt in their cars. I'm lucky - my kids don't have to sit in the car after a fun day of playing. I don't think I'd want my car covered in mud either. I just know that it's SO much fun as a kid to explore with all the different waters, sands, muds, dirts, snows, ice, and everything!
That's why I this weekend, if my kids want to, they can play in the dirt, roll around in it if they want to. I'll throw everything in the washer because who remembers a clean childhood? I certainly don't. I remember the fun I had with my brother and my brother's friend and my best friend in Holland when we were playing in this HUGE mud puddle and I got stuck in the middle of it, boots and all, only to have to have my father pull me out. It was pretty funny to see only my boots stuck in the middle of this mud puddle. That's what I remember.
I hope my kids do too.

  1. This is so true and so worth the memories...I have very fond ones as well!! Mostly of my two youngest sisters though, who stripped down and decided to take a mud bath on the front lawn lol!!
