Oreo Breastfeeding Ad

There's been a huge controversy over this ad...from outrage to acceptance...

For me, the ad is twofold...

While many are offended by the image of breastfeeding in public, I think most of us are accepting...most of the controversy was over the image of a bare breast on an ad for Oreos... While I am not at all offended by the bare breast (YAY FOR BREASTFEEDING!), I see this ad in a different light...

I think it is absolutely horrific to pair a breastfeeding infant with an Oreo...who actually gives their tiny infant an Oreo to eat??? There is no nutritional value there! Having just started Ethan on solids, he absolutely loves the NATURAL sweetness of fruits...and they're nutritious! Why would anyone give a baby an Oreo, filled with sugars and additives? A baby's digestive system is only just starting to develop...it shouldn't have to try to digest those complex sugars and additives. The baby in this ad looks barely old enough for solids as it is.

Don't get me wrong...my 2 (almost 3) year old has a MAJOR sweet tooth...and yes, he eats Oreos. So do my 5 and 7 year olds...in moderation, of course. I think it's something that you can give your child when they're ready for it...when their bodies can handle the sugar load that comes with it.

Now, if this was an ad for apples, and the baby was breastfeeding and holding an apple, I'd say "Cute!" ... shows off the nutritional value of breastfeeding and baby could have apple (pureed, of course). I'd love it!

But the fact that a baby that is breastfeeding is holding a cookie filled with crap (cause really, that's what it is) is appalling..

I know there are many people out there who give babies foods they're not ready for...and that's their business...

But as for my children (baby)...no way...I didn't even give my babies juice till they were 2...

  1. Wow! I'm with you, Cin! Who in their right mind would give an infant an Oreo? It really does send the wrong message - nutritionally speaking.
