Cake thoughts

I am so proud of my (new) 8 year old.

I want to give her whatever she wants.  Within reason, of course. (Of course our kids don't get everything they want).

However, we do try to find ways to make things happen, even if it's not the same.

Enter the cake I made Megan for her birthday.

I posted a photo of it on Facebook and got a lot of positive comments.

However, I should've realized that not all my "Friends" are friends who value my feelings.  Some don't care what they say to me...careless as they are.

I realize I also opened myself up for both positive and negative comments when I post something of Facebook or my blog, so I am also to blame.

I got a comment from an unnamed person and it hurt me a lot.

This is the status I posted on Facebook:

Thanks to everyone for their positive comments on the cake I made for my sweet girl. My kids get to choose a cake out of my cake books and I try to replicate it as cost-efficiently as I can. It still amazes me how some people don't follow the simple human-rule of "if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all" though. I try to tell myself that those people don't matter but it still hurts.
In the end, I know I made my 8 year old happy with a cake I enjoyed making, despite whether it was a bit over the top. I enjoy the challenge of making a cake without all the modern gadgets cake professionals use (since we do live on a teacher's salary). It's a hobby of mine and when someone expresses their negative opinion on that, I need to remind myself that it doesn't matter.

I don't care how old you are - you try to always value people's feelings.

Think before you speak.

If you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all.

That's what Ian and I teach our children.

Too bad not everyone does.

I feel sorry for them.

  1. Hi Cindy
I have completely been there to... I to want to do everything I can to make my kid's dreams come true and my Ian and I have fun on that journey whether it is birthday fun, extracurricular activities or family vacations! It is so fun to be creative and our kids certainly love it all and we are making wonderful memories along the way. Sometimes others just don't understand and hold a big of jealousy towards us. We don't need to be wealthy or famous to make great things happen for our famil y but so many people just don't understand that. I have people in my life (they are slowly taking up less space in my world...) that make me feel bad for all that I do for the kids and how much effort I put into our life. I just try (and try is the magic word) to not think about them and move on. I hope this makes you feel better. I loved the cake and can only imagine how it made your daughter, Megan, feel... and that is what really matters!

    1. Deb,
Thank you so much for your encouraging and supportive words. It's so true...people who don't have kind things to say and are just judgmental shouldn't take up part of my time and my world. So true. The ones who are supportive and there for us are the ones that we should devote our time to. Thank you, Deb :)
We definitely need to meet up - seems we have a lot in common, huh? :)
