World Cup Soccer at Daycare

Since the World Cup Soccer started on June 11, the daycare kids and I have been busy with soccer. I assigned all the 32 countries to the kids and and their favourite stuffed animals or pets. Then, we started tracking the matches on tv. I created a huge flow chart that shows the dates/times/competitions for the soccer matches. The winner will be getting a world cup soccer ball as a trophy!

Aside from watching some of the games with the kids, we’ve also done a lot of arts and crafts. They’ve coloured their flags, the uniforms that the soccer players wear, we’ve taken their photos and they’ve cut themselves out of the photo and put themselves in a net and coloured it. We’ve also made trading cards that shows off their statistics, much like the hockey cards you collect. I laminated them and each child got their own card and a copy of the other kids’ trading cards as well. It serves as a great memory of this past year, and of the world cup, of course!

Now that we’re in the quarter finals, starting tomorrow (which we are ANXIOUSLY anticipating), I’m going to be posting the kid’s matches on my blog, so that they can follow it during the summer holidays. Therefore, the following competitions will be taking place in the next few days:

QUARTER FINALS!

Friday July 2
10:00 – Netherlands (Austen) VS Brazil (JS)
2:30 – Uruguay (Denver our cat) VS Ghana (NB)

Saturday July 3
10:00 – Argentina (JB) VS Germany (Megan)
2:30 – Paraguay (Dakota our dog) VS Spain (JH)

We’re very excited for tomorrow’s game, Netherlands VS Brazil, particularly because Netherlands is the country we cheer for (since Canada isn’t in the World Cup) and with me being from Holland/Netherlands it was the next best thing! Also, Megan’s best friend is Brazil so we’re very anxious to see what will happen. “Brazil (JS)” is very excited with his team; he even has a Brazil hat! So cute.

A lot of kid’s teams went on to the Round of 16 but got knocked out after that.

It’s neat to see all the kids and the flags they have started to recognize. We’ll be driving in the van and pass by a flag and the kids will point out whose flag it is. What a learning experience!

Good luck to all the teams these next 2 days!
