Incident at restaurant

When I was younger, we'd alway go for a Sunday drive (My mom, my dad, and my brother, sister, and I). Many times we'd stop at this "snackbar" to get an ice cream. I didn't like soft serve and always got a meatball.

Yup, a meatball.

No ketchup, no mayo, nothing. Even in the hottest weather. (Ian makes sooooo much fun of me).
I guess I don't care if it's warm or cold outside, if I feel like ice cream in the winter I'll have it. Same in the summer...if I want a tea (never coffee cause of my Crohn's - it bothers me) I'll have one, even if it's 30C outside.

Today too. We went out for supper and after working in the basement all day (heavy lifting and stuff) I reeeaaaallly wanted a tea. So I ordered one. Mason was in his highchair right beside me at the end of our booth. The waitress came back balancing my tea and two waters and a bowl with creamers on her tray.

And she lowers it down and rests the tray on Mason's high chair tray.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WHAT???

Instantly, Mason reached for the little tin kettle with the hot water and tea bag on it.

Of course he would!

He's one!

Thank God I had quick reflexes. I don't usually but THANK GOD I DID. If not, I would have a scalded baby on my hands now.

I yanked his hands away and held on tightly.
"The tea!" I said to the waitress.
She didn't do anything. Didn't say anything. Just put everything down and walked away. She hadn't flinched. No apology.

I couldn't believe it.

I looked at Ian. He was just as shocked. It would've been ok if she had said sorry - mistakes happen. But nothing!

I have waitressed a lot, in a bit more of a higher end type of restaurant than this one. But one thing I was taught right away is that you NEVER put your tray on the customer's table. Now, I don't care if a waitperson puts their tray on my table - not at all! But with a hot tea on my baby's high chair tray? PLEASE!

We didn't end up saying anything but I'm wondering if anyone out there would have? Would you give her the benefit of the doubt or would you have done something?

PS The waitress was probably about 16.

  1. benefit of the doubt....she's young...probably doesn't know any better (unfortunately)

  2. I would have said it... it could prevent somebody else's baby from getting mom's tea.

  3. I would just have told her in a friendly way
that she has to think twice next time to do a thing like this again
maybee now she is going to do it again
    love Mom
