I'm not an expert at baby raising at all. In fact, the "infant stage" is my least favourite stage. I know, a lot of people are in love with the infant stage, when their babies are so dependent on them, but I prefer when they get a little older, aroun 7 or 8 months, or at least when they can sit up on their own.
One thing I have found the most beneficial in dealing with the infant stage though, is the book "The Happiest Baby on the Block" by Dr. Harvey Carp. If you never read anything on babies, at least read this. It's such an amazing and useful book. I once saw Dr. Karp on a talk show where he demonstrated his ways in soothing an infant and it's amazing! There is also a DVD but I haven't seen it yet.
He talks about the 5 S's. That is:
Shush
Side
Swaddle
Swing
Suck
If you combine all those and "apply" it to your infant, it's amazing how it soothes them. You swaddle your baby (tight) (there's instructions on how to properly swaddle your baby in the book), you swing them in your arms, on their side, while they suck on a soother or whatever, and you shush "shhh sshhhhh" (or turn on white noise like we do). Works like magic!
