Baby

Ian and I have been through hell and back the last few weeks.

In a way, I guess we've always taken for granted, really, that our children would be healthy. When I was pregnant, it never really crossed my mind that something could be wrong with our unborn baby.

Thursday, a few weeks ago, Ian was on his way back from his grandmother's funeral, when I got a call at home. The doctor wanted to see us to discuss some of baby's results. I knew right away what was wrong. I called Ian, upset.

The next day, we went in and the doctor confirmed what I already kind of knew. She gave us options for further testing and we chose to partake in them. The next days held a lot of anxiety, sadness, and devastation. Never in a million years had I really thought that something could actually be wrong with our baby. We felt like we were grieving...

On Monday we met with a genetic counsellor who explained our results further and offered us the option of further testing (an amniocentesis). An amnio in itself carries a miscarriage risk (1%) so we were hesitant but finally decided that we needed to put our minds at ease and that we needed to know what our future would hold.

Over the next few days, we awaited test results which sadly didn't come before the weekend. We had to endure another weekend with no known answers. I can tell you this. Never have I felt such devastation, loneliness, sadness, and emotional all at once. Nothing compares to your child not being healthy. Because really, if your child is healthy, what more do you want? This experience has certainly reopened our eyes to the reality of what could be. This news would change our future.

Thank God that when I was grocery shopping this morning, my cellphone rang. I knew it was the genetic counsellor.
"Good news!" she said.
That's all I needed to hear. We are so so so happy that we know 100% that our child will be healthy at birth and that all this stress is finally over. We can be happy again.

I am so grateful to have 4 happy, healthy children and will never take a healthy life for granted again. This has really humbled us, and put everything in perspective for us. A real wake-up call of sorts. We are truly grateful for modern technology, good doctors, and of course, God, for giving us a healthy baby.

Now it's 5 months till we meet him/her...can't wait!!
